What battery does an Apple AirTag use?
Most Apple AirTags take a CR2032 (3 V lithium coin cell). The battery is under the steel cover; CR2032 is printed on the cell.
| Battery | How common | Size | Volts | Capacity |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| CR2032 | Most common | 20 mm × 3.2 mm | 3 V | ≈ 225 mAh |
Apple AirTag battery: what to know
- Every AirTag uses one CR2032 3 V lithium coin cell, and it lasts about a year.
- To open it, press the polished steel cover and turn it anticlockwise until it stops, then lift it off.
- Some CR2032 packs have a bitter coating (to deter children from swallowing them) that can stop the cell touching the AirTag contacts; Apple suggests an uncoated cell if a new battery does not work.
- Your iPhone shows a low-battery alert in the Find My app before the battery runs out.
How to check which battery your Apple AirTag takes
The battery is under the steel cover; CR2032 is printed on the cell. Battery codes are printed on the flat face of coin and button cells and along the side of AA, AAA and 9V batteries. Match the code exactly: a CR2025 or CR2016 is the same width but thinner, and a CR2450 will not fit.
