What battery does a digital thermometer use?
Most digital thermometers take an LR41 (1.5 V alkaline button cell). Some use AAA or CR2032 instead. The battery cap is usually at the top end of a stick thermometer; the code is on the cell.
| Battery | How common | Size | Volts | Capacity |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| LR41 | Most common | 7.9 mm × 3.6 mm | 1.5 V | ≈ 35 mAh |
| AAA | Also used | 10.5 mm × 44.5 mm | 1.5 V | ≈ 1,150 mAh |
| CR2032 | Also used | 20 mm × 3.2 mm | 3 V | ≈ 225 mAh |
Digital Thermometer battery: what to know
- Most stick-style digital fever thermometers use one LR41 (AG3 / 392) button cell.
- Ear and forehead thermometers often use AAA batteries or a CR2032 coin cell.
- Meat and kitchen thermometers commonly use LR44 or CR2032 cells.
How to check which battery your digital thermometer takes
The battery cap is usually at the top end of a stick thermometer; the code is on the cell. Battery codes are printed on the flat face of coin and button cells and along the side of AA, AAA and 9V batteries. Match the code exactly: a cell that looks similar can be a different thickness or voltage; see the LR41 page for safe swaps.
AAA: NiMH rechargeable AAA (HR03) is 1.2 V and 800–1,100 mAh. Lithium AAA (FR03) lasts longer in cold and high-drain use.
