CR123A: what to know
- Lights and cameras that take two CR123As in series run at 6 V; replace both cells together with the same brand, as mixing old and new cells can overheat the weaker one.
- It is sometimes listed as 16340 or RCR123A when rechargeable, but those are 3.7 V lithium-ion cells, not true equivalents.

Can I use another battery instead of a CR123A?
| Battery | Size | Volts | Works? | Why |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 18650 | 18 mm × 65 mm | 3.6 V | No | Rechargeable 3.6 V cell (4.2 V when full): can damage a 3 V device. |
| CR2 | 15.6 mm × 27 mm | 3 V | No | Different width: 15.6 mm vs 17 mm. |
What uses a CR123A battery?
- Wireless security cameras and alarm sensors
- Tactical and weapon-mounted flashlights
- Film cameras
- Smart-home sensors and smart locks
Rechargeable RCR123A / 16340 cells are 3.6–4.2 V, not 3 V; only use them in devices that say they accept RCR123A.
