9V: what to know
- The rectangular PP3 shape with a snap connector on top is shared by alkaline, lithium, zinc-carbon and rechargeable 9V batteries.
- Zinc-carbon 9V batteries (6F22) are cheaper but hold far less energy; avoid them in smoke alarms.

Lithium 9V (about 1,200 mAh) lasts several times longer in smoke alarms. NiMH 9V is usually 8.4 V and 175–300 mAh, too little for most smoke alarms.
